🥔 Lekker Learn Tuesday
Ever wondered why we add salt to the water when boiling potatoes? It's not just an old family tradition—it actually makes a difference! 🧂 Here's why: ✅ Potatoes absorb a little of the salt as they cook, giving them flavor from the inside out. ✅ You won't need to add as much salt afterwards. ✅ Well-seasoned potatoes make everything taste better, whether you're making mash, potato salad, or serving them alongside a braai. 💡 Bonus Tip: Start your potatoes in cold, salted water and then bring them to a boil. This helps them cook more evenly, so you don't end up with mushy outsides and hard centers. Sometimes the best kitchen tips are the simple ones passed down through generations. 👇 What's your favorite way to enjoy potatoes? Rice Krispies Treats — The South African Way!
A recipe our friend from Alaska @Dar Brown posted in her community brought back so many memories. It made me think about the Rice Krispies treats I used to make for my kids’ birthday parties — sticky fingers, laughter, and that sweet smell of condensed milk filling the kitchen. So, how do you make Rice Krispies treats the South African way? I take the classic Rice Krispies squares and add that unmistakable Mzansi twist — condensed milk, colourful sprinkles, and a whole lot of gees! Perfect to keep the kids busy this last week of the school holidays. 😊 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 4 cups Rice Krispies cereal 1/2 cup condensed milk 1/4 cup butter/margarine 1 bag (200g) marshmallows 1 tsp vanilla essence 1/2 cup colourful sprinkles 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 ➜ Melt the butter/margarine over low heat. ➜ Add marshmallows and stir until smooth. ➜ Stir in the condensed milk and vanilla essence for extra sweetness and flavour. ➜ Remove from heat and quickly fold in Rice Krispies until evenly coated. ➜ Press the mixture firmly with a spatula into a greased square dish. ➜ Decorate with the colourful sprinkles while still warm. ➜ Allow to set for 30 minutes, then cut into squares and enjoy. 👉 What’s YOUR South African spin on a classic snack?

Monday – Word of the Week
If you're South African, you've probably said "Ja nee..." more times than you can count! The funny thing? It doesn't always just mean "yes." 😂 Sometimes it means: 🤔 "I need a moment to think." 😅 "I don't really know what to say." 🙈 "I hear you... but I'm not convinced." 😂 Or simply... "Well... that's South Africa for you!" It's one of those uniquely South African expressions that somehow makes perfect sense to us! 💬 Your turn! Finish this sentence: "Ja nee..." _______________________ Or tell us what "Ja nee" usually means in your family. Let's see who has the funniest explanation! ❤️
