🇿🇦 Did you know?
This morning I was reminded yet again of the wonderful country we live in. I’ve got guests visiting from Potchefstroom — the place where I was born and spent most of my years. It took me back to memories of Vredefort, where my grandpa had a farm, and where we took Sunday School kids and Scouts for camp. And of course, I thought about the Vredefort Dome — over 2 billion years old and so massive it’s visible from space! 🌍 Did you know that from the warm Indian Ocean waves of Durban to the icy Atlantic waters of Cape Town, our coastline is one of the most diverse in the world? For me it was just a reminder this morning that our land carries stories far older than us, shaping the beauty we see today. Let’s share those stories with fellow members who don’t know South Africa like we do. 👉 Drop your favourite Did you know fact below — let’s celebrate the hidden gems of Mzansi together.

@Sandy Chong in Europe, they do grow maize, but its not really anything as interesting as our mealies. These are NOT for human consumption and are bland and gross. How do I know, I tried some, not once but several times.

@Maria Roberts I had no idea, I thought they were retired.
💸 Mini Challenge: The R100 Test!
Earlier this week, Tamsin shared her holiday vibes video about keeping the kids busy while teaching them a valuable R100 lesson. Then our expat friends jumped in, showing how far R100 stretches on their side of the world. It got me thinking… what would I buy for myself with R100? 🤔 So let’s make it fun: imagine you’ve got R100 in your pocket today — how would you spend it to make your Saturday lekker? 👉 Snacks? 👉 Street food? 👉 A random splurge? 👉 Something clever that stretches the cash? Drop your answer below — let’s see who comes up with the most creative, funny, or downright practical way to use that R100. 🇿🇦✨ 🔥 The most creative answer gets bragging rights — so bring your best ideas!

After deep meditation, three spreadsheets, and a brief consultation with my inner financial advisor (who sounds suspiciously like my mother), I’ve decided exactly how my R100 will be deployed this Saturday. First, I’m blowing R30 on a Gatsby-sized samoosa — because nothing says “I make good life choices” like food that could double as a weapon. Then I’m investing R20 in a Creme Soda, the official drink of South Africans who believe they’re still 12 years old inside. With the remaining R50, I’ll be purchasing one of those mystery items from the guy at the robot — because nothing stretches your money like buying something you didn’t know you needed and still don’t fully understand. By the end of the day, I’ll have snacks, nostalgia, and a questionable gadget… which is basically the South African definition of a lekker Saturday.

@Maria Roberts not much I can do with R100 where I live... the 1kg Boerie I bought on IOW cost me close enough to a R1000
🍽️ FOOD FRIDAY-Vetkoek with Mince
There are some meals that do more than satisfy your hunger—they bring back memories. A warm, golden vetkoek filled with rich, savory mince is one of those timeless South African favorites. For generations, it's been enjoyed at family gatherings, church bazaars, school fundraisers, rugby matches, community events, and around kitchen tables where stories were shared and laughter filled the room. It's more than just food—it's part of who we are. It reminds us of home, of togetherness, and of the traditions that connect us across cultures and generations. Today, we celebrate a proudly South African classic that continues to bring people together, one delicious bite at a time. ❤️ What does vetkoek and mince remind you of? We'd love to hear your favorite memory in the comments!

Painting Sold
I was given a project to do for a South African living in an apartment in Millwall (London) so I asked my mum to create a concept for wall art. This is what my mother came up with! I digitally recreated it and it was printed in a printshop here in Eastbourne and hung it on Monday. The Customer absolutely loves it.
