On 19 June I started a brand-new free Skool community for Affinity Photo Creatives. At the moment of writing, here at the current stats: - Gained 546 members (80% active this month),
- Earned $947 in (low-ticket) sales,
- Ranked #139 in Discovery (#3 in Arts & Crafts)
- In just 21 days, which is NUTS!
ππ½ Here's an overview of HOW I did it + my the BIGGEST mistakes/takeaways:
ππππ 1:
- Start a FREE Skool community and create a GOOD about page.
- Create START HERE-post for new members to introduce themselves for first engagement, and explain how to get the most out of the community.
- Repurposed old course material that unlocks at lvl 3 to boost initial engagement.
- Shared community link in YT community post (then 13,5k subs), FB group post (2k members) and email (1,6k subs).
- Changed the CTA in video descriptions of my 30 most recent YT videos. (One video took off, which lead to boost in new members coming over from Ps).
- Recorded and shared a Skool community video tour for YT channel (and About Page).
- Did first free live group call to meet and start building relationship with new members + asked feedback to shape the community THEIR way (still do this EVERY live call).
- Made a few value posts and encouraged members to share their art.
- Engaged with every new member, comment, DM, etc. (still try to do this).
- End of week: 276 members. (= 276 new members)
ππππ 2:
- Got Zoom subscription to record live calls for members who can't attend live (unlock lvl 2)
- Did 2 more free live group calls to build relationship and get feedback.
- Added a short free course for all NEW members (quick win).
- Fine-tuned the About Page: improved copy, added value stack, and real testimonials in graphics.
- One-Time-Purchases got introduced, so moved my low-ticket brush bundle course to Skool for a discount ($37, normally $57) to attract new members -> Made first Skool $$$.
- Growth of the community slowed down, but engagement and satisfaction went up!
- Created more 2 more YT videos, with CTA to join Skool.
- Continued engaging with all members in DMs, comments, live group calls, etc. They're engaged and love the community vibe.
- Started hopping on calls with other Skool community owners and likeminded people to bounce off and share ideas (works magic!).
- End of week: 386 members. (= 110 new members)
ππππ 3:
- Launched another low-ticket product in a first free creative live session core members had been asking for (made recording available in classroom to promote course).
- Edited and published the recording to YouTube to attract more new members and potential buyers.
- Set up rules and guidelines for the group since some member seemed to be using other people's artworks (nothing too serious in the end).
- Continued engaging with all members in DMs, comments, live group calls, etc. New members also love the vibe. β To give you an idea of the engagement: there's 14x lvl 4 members, 12x lvl 5 members and even 3x lvl 6 members (incl. myself).
- Did a 500+ member celebration live call, and got exact feedback on how members would love to pay for smaller group 4-day live sessions -> MY NEXT STEP!
- Next to Skool, my YT Channel also grew with 6,1% to now 14,288 subs!
- End of week: 540 members (= 154 new members)
πππππππ ππππππππ π ππππ:
- Asking the wrong membership questions and not asking for their email right from the beginning. To keep it a targeted group I thought to filter out all non-Affinity Photo users, and denied access to everybody else. I should've just accepted them to the group since they're interested in joining and perhaps want to learn more about photo editing in Affinity Photo.
- Adding wrong links to the community home, I linked to free lead magnets, but since now I already had their email from membership questions this didn't make any sense anymore. Now I link to START HERE post and posts that link to paid courses, and soon group coaching.
πππππππ ππππππππ:
- ALWAYS ask your members for feedback. They'll tell you exactly what they want, so you don't have to think - just do!
- FREE communities work - they're like mailing lists on steroids! Zero barrier to entry and you're able to connect with individuals in MANY different ways. And now with the possibility to monetize it with one-time-purchases is absolute GOLD.
- Add members to your group even if they don't seem a perfect fit yet, they might become your best members in the (near) future!
- FINAL TIP: Listen to , he made me do this all. Thanks legend. Hope to meet you soon!
All the best and I hope this post inspires and will help you on your journey to follow your passion all while helping others and earning big $$$!
