Lesson #6: Should I Cold Plunge When I’m Sick?
“Should I plunge when I’m sick?” is one of the most common questions out there.
The answer?
Listen to your body.
Only you know what is best for you.
Additionally, here’s my personal opinion and what I do.
If I don’t have a fever over 100 degrees, I still always will plunge.
That said, I aim to go in slightly warmer temperatures (50-60f) and I typically don’t stay in the water more than 3 minutes at the most.
The idea is basically to be more gentle on your body and to not cause it additional stress as it’s working hard internally to heal.
For me personally, the reason I like to continue to plunge (even if it’s for a shorter duration) when I’m starting to come down with something is that I know how powerful the cold water can be for flushing toxins out of the body.
The lymph and the bloodstream are flushed clean each time those arteries close off while in the cold and then open back up in the rewarming process.
The key: IF (and this is a big IF) you choose to plunge when you are sick you should always be MORE GENTLE with yourself.
This means not going for a world record or a personal best!
Get in for a couple of minutes, warm up, sip hot tea, and continue to take care of yourself.
It’s also not uncommon to feel more fatigue after a cold plunge when your body is fighting off something.
Allow yourself that time to rest and to get better.
Sauna is also highly recommended when you’re sick (even more so than cold plunging) so long as you don’t have a fever over 100f.
