Lesson #10: To Dunk, or Not To Dunk?
It’s pretty hard to miss some of the cold plunging and ice swimming culture these days on social media and one of the things you’ll commonly see is head dunking.
What’s all the hype about?
Personally, I love head dunking.
Traditionally I would start and finish my time in the ice bath (or lakes) with it.
Head dunking in the very beginning is intense, but it also makes the rest of the experience seem easier.
Here’s the pros:
-It immediately wakes you up on another level!
-It feels refreshing
-It allows for more cold exposure in a shorter period of time
-It’s the quickest way to cool off if you’ve been in really hot outdoor temperatures.
Here’s the cons:
-Risk of hitting your head on rocks or trees if you’re outdoors in a lake or river
-Water up the nose or ears (with bacteria risks)
-Potential to develop headaches with extreme cold
Obviously you can weigh both sides of the coin and choose for yourself.
In our studio, we don’t allow head dunking simply to limit liability but also to avoid hair getting in our tubs.
I’ll close today’s lesson with this:
Be smart.
The brain is a very sensitive area of the body.
Very sensitive.
If you underestimate that sensitivity by being stupid and hold your head under very cold water for long periods of time, nothing positive is going to come from that.
Be very wise when it comes to your head under very cold water.
My personal recommendation is to not even consider a head dunk until you have 100 cold plunges under your belt.
